Introduction

The particular features of the modern lifestyle are closely associated with producing a lot of waste of different types, and the process can be discussed as a result of developing consumption principles. The problem is in the fact that the significant amounts of waste can be considered as hazardous, and this waste requires specific disposal or management based on recycling and other methods. Hazardous waste which is not recycled effectively, but disposed near the residential territories is the threat not only for the public health and safety but also for the environment because of a lot of associated hazardous toxic substances which can pollute the air, soil, and water. Thus, the issue of hazardous waste disposal is the real challenge for the professionals to protect the health of the public and avoid the environmental pollution.

Statement of the Problem

The waste can be discussed as hazardous when it is the source of threat for the public health and environment. The threat can be affected by the waste materials which are often reactive or toxic. It is possible to determine several types of hazardous waste according to the type of the threat for the environment. These types are organized into two groups which are the characteristic hazardous waste and listed hazardous waste. Characteristic hazardous waste is harmful because of the reactivity and toxicity of the definite materials. When this type of waste is not disposed and recycled effectively it is the real threat for the environment because of the potential polluting the air, water, and soil with the harmful substances. The radioactive materials are characterized by the long half life influencing the public health and the state of the environment. The flammable waste also belongs to this category. Furthermore, the potentially hazardous industrial, universal, and medical types of waste are also discussed within this category and should be disposed according to the definite standards. There is also a list of the hazardous waste materials including different biohazard and chemical products associated with the definite industries, for instance petroleum industry, and households (Pichtel).

Batteries, medicines and chemicals, specific types of light bulbs, and agricultural chemicals belong to the hazardous waste and should be managed properly. The problem of the hazardous waste disposal depends on the necessity to provide the effective systems of recycling and removing the hazardous materials without providing the negative effects on the environment in the form of harmful emissions and smokes. It is a challenge for the environmental engineers to determine the definite sites for disposal in order to avoid the threat for the environment and public health (Pichtel). Today, there are few technologies which can be discussed as effective to remove the hazardous waste without the further negative effects on the environment. That is why, it is necessary to concentrate on developing the other technologies to be used for the hazardous waste management.

Historical Basis of the Problem

Several centuries ago, the problem of the harmful effects of waste removing existed with references to the air pollution because of burning the …
