Using American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) guidelines, what academic and experiential qualifications should a nurse have to practice in the home or community setting?

ANCC is the world’s largest credential organization, and a subsidiary of the American Nurse Association (ANA). Since 2011, ANCC has been certifying over 75,000 APRNs, including clinical nurse specialists as well as nurse practitioners. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the professions stated above are among the highest paying jobs in the whole sphere of nursing occupations. But to become a nurse practitioner, one needs to put a lot time and effort to. Students with a high school diploma initially have to study for a ‘Registered Nurse’ ( RN) certification, or for a degree in nursing. This course can usually be completed in 2 to 4 years, depending on what kind of degree you going for. One has a right to choose between the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or the Associate’s Degree in Nursing (AND). After graduation, students should obtain an RN certification and pursue theirs specialization through a MSN program degree. This can be achieved by either completing an online course or campus based program, depending on student preferences. To become a Nursing Practitioner in the United States, one does need to have knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which has to do with health insurance for workers as well as their employees in case they lost their job. Knowledge of Psychology is greatly required as well. In most cases it is mandatory, since many nurses work with psychiatrists and have to understand the way patients may be feeling.

It is important not to forget that nurse practitioners may specialize in a variety of medical fields, from dermatology to women’s health and emergency care. That is why they have to be able to perform many of the same functions as family practice doctors do and provide the best preventive health care together with diagnosing and treating illnesses, injuries and other health conditions of families and individuals overall.
