Obsessive-compulsory disorder is a very rare disease. It is very resistant to treatment. “It often starts in childhood or adolescence, with a median age of onset of 20 years”. This disease is the result of the exaggerating worrying as for the surrounding world. It results in the excessive cleaning and washing, thorough checking of the information, preoccupation with sexual or religious thoughts, opening and closing the door for a definite period of time before entering. All this can lead to the distress not only of the person who is ill, but of the people who are nearby.
In the course of the investigations, the new ways of treatment have been found. The experiment took place. Ninety-seven of 112 patients (87%) completed the full 12 weeks of treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) was applied. Another types of treatment were sertaline alone and combined treatment. The rate of clinical remission for combined treatment was 53.6%; for CBT alone, 39.3%; for HYPERLINK "http://ukpmc.ac.uk/abstract/MED/15507582/?whatizit_url_Chemicals=http:/ /www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/searchId.do?chebiId=CHEBI%3A9123" \t "_blank" sertraline alone, 21.4%; and for placebo, 3.6%. “Children and adolescents with HYPERLINK "http://ukpmc.ac.uk/abstract/MED/15507582/?whatizit_url=http://ukpmc.ac. uk/search/?page=1&query=%22OCD%22" \t "_blank" OCD should begin treatment with the combination of CBT plus a selective HYPERLINK "http://ukpmc.ac.uk/abstract/MED/15507582/?whatizit_url_Chemicals=http:/ /www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/searchId.do?chebiId=CHEBI%3A28790" \t "_blank" serotonin reuptake inhibitor or HYPERLINK "http://ukpmc.ac.uk/abstract/MED/15507582/?whatizit_url_gene_protein=htt p://www.uniprot.org/uniprot/?query=CBT&sort=score" \t "_blank" CBT alone” (March).
The other investigation has been applied to 48 children and adolescents with severe primary obsessive-compulsive disorder. It lasted for 10 weeks. Such medicines as clomipramine hydrochloride and desipramine hydrochloride were taken by the patients. “Clomipramine was clearly superior to desipramine in significantly reducing obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Age at onset, duration and severity of illness, type of symptom, and plasma drug concentrations did not predict clinical response to clomipramine” (Leonard, Swedo, Rapoport, Koby, Lenane, Cheslow; Hamburger). As a result, 64% of patients who received clomipramine as their first active treatment showed at least some sign of relapse during desipramine treatment.
