First paragraph: “Junior colleges come in all sizes and kinds.”

I am strongly convinced that this paragraph is organized deductively because its beginning is nothing, but a strong statement that is discussed through the whole paragraph. While the deductive structure includes such elements as “theory, hypothesis, observation and confirmation” (Deduction & Induction 2012), the first sentence, which is the strongest statement at the same time, can be called “theory” or “hypothesis”. The next four sentences present the observations that aim to prove the first statement. The last sentence is a practical confirmation of the previous observations.

Second paragraph: “Puffing heavily, I flopped into the cockpit and lay clutching the handhold above the compass as my breathing slowly returned to normal.”

I believe that this paragraph is organized inductively as there is no clear and strong statement at the beginning. Each sentence adds more details to the obscure picture of the situation described be the author of the paragraph and only at the end more or less clear situation appears. Till the end the reader has to process each sentence to find out anything new. The reader has to start with the simplest observations and, gaining information, gradually comes to the idea the author addresses.

Third paragraph: “Sometimes the Scandinavians gave a fresh lease of life to obsolescent or obsolete native words.”

There is no doubt that this paragraph is organized deductively as the first sentence is a strong statement that is directly connected to each next one. The paragraph presents nothing, but a sequence of proofs, stated to provide a strong base to the first statement. While the first sentence can be called a hypothesis of this simplest research, each next sentence presents the kind of evidence or, as it also can be called, “observation.” However, the traditional structure of deductive argument/approach is changed as there is no “theory” or such important element as “confirmation”.
