Introduction

In order to implement the mission once adopted by the company and make the company successful, all the employees should have well-developed organization, communication, time management and leadership skills. The situation, described in the following case study, makes us not only think about possible solutions for problems, which are faced by a particular manager, but about general necessities for improvement of the management of the company. First, let us address the background situation.

Background

In April 15 new employees were successfully hired by Carl Robinson, the new campus recruiter for ABC, Inc. The orientation for new employees was planned for June 15. On May 15 Monika, Carl’s Operations Supervisor, contacted him in order to know about the progress of the recruiting process. Carl told Monika that everything was going.

Due to the fact that Carl has never conducted recruitment processes before, he tends to underestimate the timing and efforts needed for performing all tasks, related to hiring new employees. Therefore, he decides to finalize paper work related to the issue only after Memorial Day.

While looking through the files, Carl became concerned, due to the fact that he understood that a range of problems do not let him conduct the orientation on time.

Key problems

The range of problems, identified by Carl, includes the following:

Training room, which Carl needs for conducting orientation, has been reserved for the same month he needs it

Files include incomplete applications and lack transcripts

Mandatory physicals and drug screen tests were not done

Orientation manuals are both incomplete and in shortage

Most people prefer to ignore problems until they become unavoidable. (Litman T.,2012,2) Carl proved the truthfulness of this statement, having started to deal with his paperwork only after Memorial day . Actually, he had had more than a month to check the files. In case he lacked time or motivation to do it before May 15th , Monika’s call should have remembered him about the necessity to check the files.

Secondly, lack of communication should be identified as an important drawback of Carl’s work. This drawback has several displays. One deals with Carl’s failure to ensure effective communication with future employees to get all the necessary documents on time. He showed poor judgment, assuming that future employees will take care of these issues on their own. Furthermore, knowing about the orientation scheduled, Carl failed to contact other departments’ employees to reserve training room beforehand. The last communication failure is associated with ineffectiveness of communication between Carl and Monika. Instead of “assuring Monika that everything would be arranged in time“, Carl should have informed her about the actual situation and admit not having dealt with paperwork yet. Such …
