Medical information systems are subject to the same type of threats and compromises that plague general information systems, and that it does not require special attention from a research viewpoint. Many people consider information about their health to be highly sensitive, deserving of the strongest protection under the law. Long-standing laws in many states and the age-old tradition of doctor-patient privilege have been the mainstay of privacy protection for decades.
While working the front desk at our medical office, a patient came in and stared asking me several questions regarding the privacy of his records in accordance to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).He was interested in the following questions: What rights does he have regarding his medical information? How do we correct or amend the patient record? Can he request restrictions on use? Who owns the medical records? The client has free access to the medical information and can ask it any time he needs it. The patient’s record is to be corrected by the doctor and amended any time the examination is being held. The extent of privacy protection given to the patient medical information often depends on where the records are located and the purpose for which the information was compiled. The laws that cover privacy of medical information vary by situation. And, confidentiality is likely to be lost in return for insurance coverage, an employment opportunity, your application for a government benefit, or an investigation of health and safety at your work site.
There exist general principles of security that are still applied to the medical information field. People should be aware of the fact that their records are confidential and they cannot be corrected by everyone.
