The thesis of the essay says that all people face challenges in lives and these are faced in various ways – some people tend to meet challenges alone, while others use their friends’ support.
Love and desire to protect the girl from bad influences make Johnson respond in such way. She responds this way because she is afraid of negative influence of the environment, which can change the girl’s live and prevent her from personal self development.
Maddie says she’ll send Shannon a present – she’s a little girl and she does not understand the complexity of the situation and the whole problem. Sam, he is older and he asks whether the girl is going to be all right. He is worried because he understands that the disease is severe. As for Johnson’s reaction, she worries a lot and she squeezes her little daughter – this demonstrates that she is afraid to lose her or to have the same disease as Shannon has.
For Johnson there are two ways to deal with life “bombs.” The first one is being surrounded with love, friendship, while the second one is refusal from friends, communication, but living in isolation. She recognized that the second way is one she frequently notices about her own actions.
Writer’s Craft
Examples of the “bombs” which are dealt with by the isolation approach are in majority since they represent greater part of the writer’s experience.
The contrast is that children do not view themselves like children, but their look is of primary importance. Thus, the direction of the whole essay is changed to demonstrate the shift in worldview and level of self development in children.
The writer uses repetition to tell about preferences of the youth in different times and this structure is used to make the shift in fashion tendency greater.
The episode when Johnson says about Shannon’s disease involves mentioning of a “bomb.” The metaphor is used to demonstrate the readers how difficult sometimes life is and to make the readers not only to get to know about the events, but understand its participants (Nadell, Angan, Comodromos).

The main idea of the essay is that views of tweens changed and now they take care about their look more than about their personal development. Such tendency is not favorable and it needs urgent addressing since it promotes degradation of the society.
Tweens tend to cultivate self image which emphasizes sophistication. Projecting this image, to others they tend to wear in a way to look prettier, more adult, sexier, etc.
Some behavioral trends which are dangerous are linked to the tween phenomenon and these are authority of the peer group and of the media and weakening of influence of parents.
The primary causes of the tween phenomenon are absence of parents, the market, and the fact that the peer group forms a vicious circle which distorts development of youngsters.
The example helps accepting the topic discussed more neutrally without any oppression or tension.
