Zebra is a story by Chaim Potok. It is devoted to demonstrating how students can overcome some challenging situations which occur in their lives. It is a story of Adam Zebrin, who got his nickname on the basis of similarity of his family name with the name of the animal.

The story pictures he boy to be is seriously injured in an accident and because of this his physical abilities were seriously limited. Because of this, not only his body, but his spirit as well experiences significant changes.

In the course of the story, Zebra meets John Wilson, who used to serve at Vietnam and who has lost his hand. This meeting is very important for both of them and it allows the boy to discover his talent to draw – he cannot participate in the same competitions as his peers do, but he founds that he can, due to seeing things in a new way, focus on various issues inside of his soul, and he can draw.

Later Zebra decides to draw a special picture for John Wilson and later in the early fall, he receives an answer – John Wilson sends him a photo which shows him at the Vietnam Memorial Wall holding the drawing of Zebra.

John Wilson is not a stable character. Probably, the reason is that he still suffers consequences of the war and these are not only about his lost hand, but they more about his psychological condition. As for Zebra, he is more stable – despite the fact that he does not suffer less than Wilson, drawing gives him support and still he has some hope to recover and come back to normal (Potok 2000).
