African Americans

African-American history is filled with loads of stories of great inspirational characters. All had to overcome huge mountains to leave a mark. To date many African-Americans have made extraordinary achievements in their different careers. These include activists like Rosa Parks; inventors like George Washington Carver; and even the most note-able recent entertainers Oprah Winfrey who has become the richest African-American in the world. All the above have become synonymous with the rich legacy of African-American culture.

In this text we shall speak of one of these great African-American men, George Washington Carver. George was born into slavery in Diamond, Missouri in the year 1864. The exact date is still unknown. He went on to be beyond any doubt one of the most celebrated men in the African-American culture. He was just one of the many children born to Mary and Giles an enslaved couple owned by Moses Carver. It was only a few days after the birth of George when he was kidnapped along with his mother and sister by raiders from the neighboring town. They were sold to Kentucky and only George of the three kidnapped, was able to be rescued by an agent of Moses Carver and returned to Missouri.

Moses Carver and his wife took in George and his brother James after the end of the civil war and the abolishment of slavery. They were raised and educated by the Carver’s. they were taught from home as no school at that time were able to accept black students. Search for knowledge was George’s driving force from the beginning of his education life to the end of his career. As a young man George with great determination, would travel10 miles to school. He identified himself as “Carver’s George” but came to be known as “George Carver”. He attended quite a number of schools before receiving a diploma in Minneapolis High School in Minneapolis. He was accepted into Highland College in Highland, Kansas. As he was going to get his admission, George’s admission was retracted when they learnt of his race. Instead of George going to school, he instead conducted biological experiments and gathered a geological collection and he did all these at the comfort of his homestead; within the home of Moses Carver. George Washington not only played his interests in science but also took great interest in painting and drawing.

He began his study in art and music at the Simpson college in Iowa; developing his artistic skills through sketches. Hardships and torments were the order of the but none of these could get George Carver down he would get up and continue on with his determination in his work. George put a lot of his artistic work in drawing sketches and paintings of the natural world. A teacher who had seen his work on the natural world suggested that George join a college that offers Botanical studies. He joined a university college in Iowa and became the first African-American student in the same state. He excelled …
