The Shadow of the Wind was written by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and the book has been published in dozens of countries and it has been translated into more than 30 languages of the world. The Shadow of the Wind received great amount of international awards and became a bestseller.

It deals with the story in which Daniel Sempara is the protagonist. He finds a book which is written by Julian Carax, which is titled The Shadow of the Wind. The boy becomes obsessed with the book and he tries to find the author, having no idea that a dark figure which follows him is the author.

Searching for the writer, Daniel meets Fermin Romero de Torres, who is a man who has no clear past. Daniel’s father rescues the man giving him an opportunity to live and work in his shop. Later, Daniel meets many characters who answer his questions one by one, revealing the past of Carax for him.

Suddenly when the police turns out to prevent Daniel from discovering the truth, the life of the boy changes significantly as he is perceived to be destroyed physically and mentally.

The whole mystery of the book disappears after a postmortem letter of Nuria Monfort and surprisingly, but the novel ends positively, demonstrating that light might come even if life is full of injustice, mystery, and torture (The Shadow of the Wind, A Book Review).

Fermin Romero de Torres played a significant role in the whole story, being an antagonist. He is not pictured to be perfect and his appearing into the book demonstrates that he is the person who has all the reasons to be unhappy – he has no work, he has no home, and there is no hope in his life. Moreover, he is a participant of The Spanish Civil War and it has left a scar in his soul.

However, Daniel Sempere and his father notice something in this person and they believe that it is necessary to make some efforts to save him and bring some joy and peace into life of the old soldier and they are not mistaken.

Fermin Romero de Torres possessed numerous positive qualities. These are being chivalrous, loyal, he has sense of humor, he is funny, etc. In other words Fermin Romero de Torres turns out to be a perfect companion.

He is very emotional – he cries, laughs, mourns, loves and at the same time he is not afraid to face his fears because he is sure that such approach is making him stronger. He became a soul mate for Daniel and he gave him such intimate advice as how to conquer a woman: “The female heart is a labyrinth of subtleties, too challenging for the uncouth mind of the male racketeer.
