Presidential debates occur after nomination of candidates. The aim of the debate is to help the public to make the right presidential choice. The debaters should use their public speaking skills to convince the public to vote for them. They should share their minds with the audience so they need excellent communication skills. The University of Denver was the venue of the first 2012 presidential debate. The main discussion topic between President Barrack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney was domestic policy. The analysis of the 2012 presidential debate reveals the public speaking skills of President Barrack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney, who is the Republican nominee. Romney highlighted his main campaign themes and convinced the public on the success of his strategies. Romney challenged Obama’s proposals and placed him on the defensive side of his campaign themes. Romney discussed reducing the current tax rates and the retraction of Obama’s health care plan. Obama demanded that Romney should give details on how he would reduce taxes and improve America’s health care, but Romney avoided Obama’s claims. Romney retorted that Obama’s claim concerning the tax plan, which Romney proposed, was inaccurate. Romney added that he had a plan that would ensure that his tax plan was successful but failed to explain the details of the plan. Obama did not insist on the details of the plan; he moved to the next issue. Obama and the debate’s moderator did not insist on Romney’s weak points. Obama did not want to put on an angry face during the debate, so he kept his smile all along. He was not as aggressive as Romney, and he failed to carry some of his openings to the end. This weakened his claims and proposals because he was not able to argue against Romney’s campaign themes. Romney managed to convince the audience against Obama’s rule. He pointed out Obama’s flaws but Obama could not defend himself. The Bain Capital record was an issue at hand but Obama did not ask Romney to defend his claim. Obama remained confident and put on a smile throughout the debate, although he seemed frustrated (Nagata 179). Romney also maintained his aggression although he was not able to prove the efficiency of his tax plan. Public speakers should be clear on every issue they discuss. They should not leave the audience with doubts about their claims. Romney did not portray excellent public speaking skills because he failed to give details of the tax plan. He proved that he had not done enough research on the subject matter because he had inadequate information to convince Obama. Romney appealed to the Democrats because he made them realize the negative sides of Obama’s rule. He also left Obama defenseless throughout the debate. Romney did not show excellent communication skills when he retorted back at Obama’s claims concerning the Republican proposed tax plan (Nagata 180).
