Why does Harvey say that everyone must ''come out''?
Harvey Milk was a prominent gay rights activist and first openly gay elected to public office. In his speech delivered on Gay Freedom Day in 1978, the year of his death, he stated that all homosexuals must come out. Coming out to one’s family allows homosexual to fell free communicating with one’s relatives, not to be depressed by a burden of hiding something from the people one loves. Coming out to friends allows one to test them, as the real friendship will not be influenced by different sexual orientation. Hiding the truth makes homosexuals to wear a socially acceptable mask and to play a role, being a different person inside. Such imbalance of two “personalities” causes emotional sufferings to homosexuals especially when it comes to communications with one’s friends and family. Finally, Harvey wanted massive coming out as the demonstration of the fact, that homosexual “are everywhere”, and wanted to use it as a tool to protect gay rights.

Dan White occupied the position of a San Francisco supervisor as well as Harvey. White had rather conservative outlook and the relationship between the two of them could not be easy. However, at the beginning White hoped Milk would help him to prevent the opening of psychiatric center in his neighborhood. In exchange Dan would, presumably, support Milk in his ordinance of gay rights. However, Milk was not eager to support White because of the negative social consequences of the issue; therefore, White cast his vote against Harvey’s ordinance. As their relationship was complicated, when White asked the mayor to be re-installed on his position, Milk lobbied the mayor to deny his antagonist. In fact, White could be hidden gay, which explains his hate of Milk being proud of his orientation, but also being a successful politician.

Proposition 6, also known as the Briggs Initiative pursued the goal of banning homosexuals as well as supporters of their rights from working in public schools. As it has been already mentioned, Milk wanted to show that there were a great number of homosexuals and this initiative violates the rights of a massive social group. Initiative stated that so-called “public homosexual conduct” could be a reason of firing a teacher or an administrator.
