Have you ever thought what the world will be like in the next 20, 30, 40 or 50 years? A great number of discoveries and breakthroughs have been made in the last fifty years. The pace of development accelerates with every year and even more innovation can be expected in the next fifty. It goes without saying that the population of the Earth will increase. The world will become more connected and more polluted. Moreover, the scale and form of human activities will change. How will it affect the environment? In particular, will our climate change? Will our world be warmer?

Nowadays, everyone is familiar with the phrase “global warming” as it is one of the most important environmental problems of our planet (Mohr, 2005). There are a great number of opinions concerning global warming. Some people are sure that global warming will have disastrous effects on the life on our planet, while the others believe that the problem of global warming is a myth and consequently it is unworthy of consideration. Nevertheless, the fact is that the problem of global warming is real. Global warming will affect the way we live, our economy, and our community (Oxlade, 2003). It is clear that global warming is the result of human activities of all kind (Cause and effect for global warming). However, we can stop global warming if we reduce the amount of gases put into atmosphere. Moreover, it is important to understand what causes global warming and what its effects are in order to stop it.

In order to examine the causes and effects of global warming it is necessary to determine what global warming is. According to Oxlade (2003), global warming is “an increase in the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere” (p. 4). It takes place when greenhouse gases take in the heat and light from the Sun in the Earth’s atmosphere (Silverstein et al., 2009). In other words, the Sun’s heat is trapped in the atmosphere which warms the atmosphere. The increase of the temperature of our atmosphere will change the world’s weather (Cause and effect for global warming). It is important to note that this may negatively affect a great number of people, animals, and plants, as they are not able to adapt quickly to these changes (Cause and effect for global warming).

Turning now to the causes of global warming it is important to note that the main cause of the global warming are gases produced when people burn various fossil fuels (Global Warming Effects and Causes: A Top 10 List). Most gases form come from the process of burning of “fossil fuels in cars, factories and electricity production” (Causes of Global Warming). It is necessary to emphasize that the gas that causes the most warming is carbon dioxide, because it is a good absorber of the heat radiation that comes from the surface of the Earth.

As it has been identified above, carbon dioxide emissions negatively effect on the atmosphere. What influences …
