1. Compare and contrast an example of additive and subtractive sculpture. Be sure to mention the title of the work and artist, the medium and how one is additive and one is subtractive.

A sculpture which was created by means of adding material to a piece is called additive. A great example of an additive sculpture is Sunburst by Dale Chihuly. He joined similar individual pieces of blown glass in order to create an image of the sun. In its turn, a subtractive sculpture involves removing material from the piece, like wood or stone carving. Henry Moore’s Reclining Figure is an example for that. It is a large sculpture carved from fiberglass.

2. Discuss the unusual features of Mike and Doug Starn’s Big Bambu: You Can’t, You Don’t and You Won’t Stop.

Big Bambu: You Can’t, You Don’t and You Won’t Stop is an installation created by Starn brothers which appeared on Metropolitan Art Museum’s roof in summer 2010. Seven thousands of bamboo poles were craftily held together with colorful nylon ropes and they resembled a huge bird’s nest. The authors compare this structure to body arteries or a city subway system because it seems to be chaotic but in reality it is well-thought (Vogel, 2010).

3. Choose a work by Christo and Jeanne-Claude other than The Gates. Discuss why the artists might choose to work in this manner, the scale of their work and how they finance their work.

Christo and Jean-Claude were a married couple who created works of art. One of their works is The Umbrellas, Japan-USA project which was installed in 1991, when yellow umbrellas were set in California and blue umbrellas in Japan at the same time. It was supposed to reflect differences and similarities in ways of life in two different parts of the world. They used such materials as fabric, aluminum super-structure, steel frame bases, anchors, wooden base supports, bags and molded base covers. The total cost of the project was $26 million, and around 3 million people managed to see the umbrellas before de-installation (christojeanneclaude.net).

4. Compare and contrast a Romanesque cathedral with a Gothic cathedral. Include the overall look and feeling, the windows and the innovative buttressing of Gothic cathedrals.

The main feature of a Romanesque cathedral is the rounded arch. Basilica of St. Serin in France is a good example of that. It looks massive and heavy, it has small windows, barrel-vaults, and it is of a horizontal and modest height. In the meantime, Gothic cathedrals look lighter and taller; they are vertical and have groin-vaults and large windows. For instance, Notre-Dame de Paris fits this description.

5. Why do we consider Frank Lloyd Wright such an important architect? Use an example to discuss this.

Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect who created numerous building types, such as churches, offices, schools, hotels, and so on. Also he created interior elements, furniture and stained glass. He was called the greatest American architect of all times, and he stuck to an organic architecture philosophy. For example, he designed …
