12 Angry Men Character Listing

The Foreman, played by Martin Balsam, is a school football coach, focused on the proper fulfillment of his duties as a chairperson. Being somewhat irresolute, he prefers to join the majority.

Juror #2, played by John Fiedler, is a small bank clerk. Despite his timidity and naivety, he participates in the discussion.

Juror #3, played by Lee J. Cobb, is a bad-tempered businessman, whose antagonism against the “not guilty” verdict is aggravated by his relationship with his son. As a domineering father, he gives way to his inner unconscious desire to punish a rebellious son in this manner. As soon as he realizes this, he contritely brings in a verdict of not guilty.

Juror #4, played by E.G. Marshall, is an imperturbable stock broker who believes nothing but facts and logic. Emotions are alien to him. Only when the last logical argument in favor of the defendant’s guilt is broken down, he changes his mind.

Juror #5, played by Jack Klugman, has lived in a slum all his life, which makes him feel uncomfortable at the meeting of well-to do citizens. Yet, his experience proves to be valuable for understanding the usage of a switchblade.

Juror #6, played by Edward Binns, is a workman, uneducated but decent and respectful to the others.

Juror #7, played by Jack Warden, is a brash and indifferent salesman whose only concern is to bring in a verdict before his favourite sports game begins. Annoyed at the protracted debate, he votes “not guilty” just to speed up the process.

Juror #8, played by Henry Fonda, is a civilized architect who actually starts an argument by voting “not guilty” and insisting upon a painstaking examination of the evidence against the defendant.

Juror #9, played by Joseph Sweeney, is an old man who is the first to come down on the side of Juror #8 out of solidarity and respect for the latter’s righteous position.

Juror #10, played by Ed Begley, is an aggressive loudmouth, full of deep- seated prejudice that does not allow for his unbiased hearing of the case. Because of his principled stubbornness, he is one of the last to change his mind.

Juror #11, played by George …
