Abstract
The practice of using hand gel from client to client without washing hand in the community is like a culture that preserves and strengthens the group and provides the healing warmth essential to patient/family centred care (Kramer et al., 2009). Frequent use of hand hygiene such as the hand gel may cause irritation, dryness and significant damage and alter normal hand flora leading to poor hand hygiene (Gould, (2012). Community nurses should ensure that clients receive care based on the best available evidence and care should be delivered in accordance to the client’s needs (ANMC, 2008). Belconnen community nurses turn up for in-services that shows a good sign of interest in developing evidence-based healthcare (BCC, 2012) Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to review the available evidence pertaining to the above mentioned identified practice in Belconnen Community Centre which is my current clinical placement, and will make some recommendation for change in this practice although the challenge still remains to ensure that, more research needs to be carried sensibly in the future practice
Introduction
This essay aims at investigating the available evidence pertaining to the use of antimicrobial hand gel in the community setting. A broad range of credible evidence used and critically analysed with some focus on recommendations that influences the practice within the context
Any evidence based practice found are used to support the clinical decision making and how to change the practice of using antimicrobial hand gel in between patients without washing hands in the community setting. Therefore, frequent hand washing can be suggested as the best way to stop the spread of infection between clients in the community.
The essay will also describe antimicrobial hand gel issues effectively to the context and discuss broad range of credible evidences used and critically analysed by looking at what antimicrobial hand gel is and what some researchers has come up with regarding the prevention and management of infection; effective hand washing technique on hygiene practice; ethical principle guiding nurse’s practice; patient safety and ensuring continuous professional practice. The recommendation made on research, education; advocacy and funding are to improve patient outcome for batter practice. This however can be achieved through collaboration with nursing team in the community setting, planning and evaluation. Therefore, having described the best available evidence base practice for the use of waterless hand hygiene in the community setting, the essay will finally then concludes with supporting literature from some evidence best practice.
