In many homes and offices, one of the main sources of heavy power consumption is the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems, also referred to as HVAC. Amann, Ackerly and Wilson (17), say that reducing the temperature from the central heating system by 1% can subsequently cut energy costs by 10% (64). Drapes that are heavy and run all the way to the floor help keep the room warm by preventing draughts. Drapes should not be placed in front of radiators. Furniture should also not be placed in front of radiators. Having aluminum foil behind radiators helps projects heat towards the room.Cooking in the kitchen consumes energy. Money and energy can be saved in the kitchen by making the proper choices. The choice of cooking appliances and the type of fuel used in the kitchen is vital in making savings. (Amann, Ackerly, and Wilson 159). Only boil the required amount of water and use it immediately before it cools down and has to be boiled again. Having proper fitting lids on saucepans conserves more energy. Making sure that flames do not flare out beyond the bottom of the pans ensures efficient energy use.Amann, Ackerly and Wilson say that cost saving on food storage both at home or for commercial purposes can be achieved by reducing the energy used in refrigeration (157). A good way to do this is letting hot food cool properly before storage. Uncovered liquid food releases moisture inside the compartment resulting in extra use of energy. Having a full freezer is more energy efficient as compared to an almost empty one. Filling containers with water and freezing them also helps in storage in case of power outages. Keeping refrigerators and freezers away from heat sources reduces their energy consumption.Amann, Ackerly and Wilson, point out that when cleaning using dish washers and washing machines, almost 60% percent of the energy used goes towards heating the water. As such, cleaning appliances that utilize less water are more efficient in conserving water and saving on energy bills (169). Energy savings can be increased substantially by using low temperature settings for washing and allowing the clothes or dishes to dry naturally.Electronic appliances both at home and the offices should be unplugged and switched off, if not in use. When in standby mode appliances consume energy, yet, they are not in use. Amann, Ackerly and Wilson also advocate for the use of energy efficient lighting which last up to ten times longer than normal lighting fixtures (185).Most of the energy resources are found in the environment. Reducing the amount of energy used and increasing the efficiency of its use reduces environmental degradation. In conclusion, reduced power consumption translates to financial savings.
