Question 1

The author provides examples of real historical and contemporary rulers in order to analyze their mistakes and successes, as well as reveal actual human behavior in order to support his main ideas about the politics and the role of prince. The author is mostly concerned with the real – life politics and as the result, he analyzes real – life examples in order to develop political program for the prince.

Question 2

Machiavelli is more interested in what makes a good prince rather that what makes a good human being. The author emphasizes that showing good human nature is necessary for the prince; however, a good prince has to be able to do evil things in order to demonstrate his powers and make people feel fear. Therefore, being a good human being means demonstrating moral and good qualities in all life situations, while good princes may become cruel in case of necessity.

Regardless of the prince’s real nature, he should be able to do devil things in order to maintain the state. According to the author, the princes is to “be able to do devil if constrained”.

The prince has to seem to have good moral qualities. The author emphasizes that the prince should be viewed as a good ruler. Therefore, the major ethical consideration is to seem to have good and moral qualities.

According to Machiavelli, moral ends justify immoral means. It means that what really matters is the result, while the means do not play any role. Thus, if the prince has moral goal, which could benefit to him and his people, the means to reach the goal could be immoral.
