Model Speed Dating

In the following research 3 models out of 6 suggested will be chosen and discussed with much consideration: Daisyworld: Determined Daisies Model, the Community Earth System Model and the Do-it-yourself Regional Climate Forecasts: Weather at Home Model. The following models will be considered and their peculiar features will be underlined.

Speaking about the first model – Daisyorld: Determined Daisies, this is the type of model which shows the hypothetical planet covered with two types of plants: black daisies and white daisies. The model gives the possibility to perform the simulation of water balance, heat balance, solute balance and crop production. The following two flowers perform radically different functions: black daisies absorb the energy while white daisies produce it. If in the model the quantity of black daisies is more numerous, it means that more energy is absorbed, while if white daisies prevail, more energy is produced.

Both types of the flowers are influenced by the temperature rate and at the same time their albedo influences the temperature itself. In the course of the model’s functioning the increase in solar luminosity starts to take place and in order to stabilize the general temperature some of the kinds of daisies die off (The Science Education Resource Center, 2012).

As for the second model which has been chosen, the Community Earth System Model (CESM), this is a coupled system model which is aimed at stimulating the earth’s climate system. The peculiar feature of the following model is that it consists of 4 separate models at the same time: it gives the opportunity to make the research on the earth’s atmosphere, ocean, land surface and sea-ice components. Also it gives the possibility to have a look at the climate conditions in the past and present, as well as make some predictions about the future (Community Earth System Model Web-Site, 2012).

The following model presents the detailed physical representations of clouds, aerosols, sea-ice, ocean, land, biochemistry and human activities, etc. The model is really important for the research as it gives the possibility to construct detailed and precise models as the result of which the possibility to test, analyze, calibrate and visualize the model results exists. CESM also gives the scientists the opportunity to gain the deep understanding of the climate change and to observe the climate and energy interactions in the past, present and future (U.S. Department of Energy, 2012).

Speaking about Do-it-yourself Regional Climate Forecasts: Weather at Home Model, the main idea of it is to make more local but at the same time quite precise weather predictions in the particular region or area. One more aim of the project is to check the existing long-term predictions of the weather. The model can be used by running the special program on personal or working computer.
