Learning through life is the most widespread motto in the time of advanced technologies and innovations. The matter is how to learn effectively and plan the learning process. New times suggest new solutions; classical works were always referred to when it came upon judging and solving a matter. Yet, what works of modern writers can be used as behavior patterns to be followed to get adjusted to new circumstances.
The novel “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” by J.K. Rowling was viewed by many literature critics from the points of plot, structure, characters’ traits and timeless values as friendship, bravery and devotion. But few ever thought that the novel could be viewed as the pattern of self-improvement, career planning and value of learning. Among magic events that took place in the Hogwarts School, the learning process and its value are emphasized throughout the text. Thus, the main idea is that it is impossible to become a wizard without knowledge, the history, the spells and portions.
In my opinion, the reason why the book became the world’s best-seller is far beyond the uncommon and attention-arresting plot, new mysterious characters and creatures. It is the character of the main hero, who possesses no supernatural power that attracts attention. He is physically week but strong in spirit and decisive, a good friend and the person to rely upon. He is unfamiliar with the magic world of wizards and witches he finds himself in; actually “Harry was revealed that he was not miles behind everyone else” (Rowling 89).
Harry is a celebrity and is often treated in prejudiced and biased way, always expected to show excellent knowledge and extraordinary abilities. However, his friend Ron and he work hard to gain the knowledge and they, “moaning and yawning, spent most of their free time in the library with Hermione trying to get through all their extra work hard to get ready to pass the exams” (Rowling 151). Self-education and constant self-improvement are the key factors of a successful student at Hogwarts. The main heroes work hard to recover the point the Gryffindor lost in their night adventure. The friends “kept to themselves, working late into the night, learning charms and spells by heart, memorize the dates of magical discoveries and goblin rebellions …” (Rowling 162).
Notwithstanding all the dangerous events Harry had experienced, he is still concentrated on his study not to be expelled from the school and sent back to his relatives to lead the miserable life of an outcast, a weird and freak in the Dudleys’ family. Thus, “he would never quite remember how he had managed to get through his exams when he half expected Voldemort to come bursting through the door at any moment”, besides, “Harry did the best he could, trying to ignore the stabbing pains in his forehead, which has been bothering him ever since his trip to the forest.” (Rowling 173).
